Arecor hails results from study of rapid-acting insulin

This second phase I study pitted AT247 against the gold standard treatments for diabetes

Arecor Therapeutics PLC (AIM:AREC) hailed the positive findings of a second phase I clinical trial of its ultra-rapid-acting insulin candidate, AT247.

Researchers found the drug had a superior pharmacokinetic (PK) profile to the gold standard treatments NovoLog and Fiasp. PK profiling reveals how a drug is absorbed, metabolised and distributed by the body.

The study also demonstrated AT247’s "statistically superior" early glucose-lowering effect compared with NovoLog.

Additionally, the Arecor team was able to show that the drug was safely and effectively delivered using an insulin pump.

Chief executive Sarah Howell described the results as a "major milestone".

“These results show, once again, that AT247 has a stronger overall profile than the rapid-acting insulins currently available to patients and they reinforce our belief in its potential to facilitate a fully closed-loop artificial pancreas, a potentially life-changing treatment option for people living with diabetes,” she said.

“The successful completion of this trial, the first to investigate the potential of AT247 when delivered by subcutaneous infusion via an insulin pump over a period of three days, is an important milestone for Arecor.”
