Toyota Motor (NYSE:TM) confirmed roughly 296,000 pieces of customer information may have been leaked.
It said 296,019 email addresses and phone numbers of customers using T-Connect, its telematics service that connects vehicles via a network, were potentially uncovered.
Individuals who signed up to the service’s website using email addresses from July 2017 could have had their information breached.
Third-party access could not be confirmed from the data server where the information was stored, Toyota said in a statement Friday.
Although, at the same time, the global carmaker admitted third-party access “could not be completely ruled out”.
There was no possibility, Toyota insisted, that sensitive personal data – including names or credit card details – were leaked.
The Japanese company did not know of any cases where the information had been misused, but warned spamming, phishing scams and unsolicited emails could arise from the leak.
