FTSE 100 down with eyes on Truss’ speech

The FTSE 100 fell this morning.

Prime Minister Liz Truss will speak at the Tory party conference today, where she is expected to double down on her policies on economic growth.

Elon Musk opted to proceed with his offer to buy Twitter for $44 billion, according to a report from Bloomberg. Shares surged 22%, up to US$52 and just below the US$54.20 per share offer.

Tesco warned that cost inflation will drag full-year adjusted operating profits to the bottom end of previous guidance. This would see profits come in between £2.4bn and £2.5bn.

Britain’s supermarket giants have again been accused of dragging their heels when it comes to passing on lower costs of petrol, say the RAC. Average prices per litre fell nearly 7p over September, but a full reduction would have resulted in a 17p fall.

Vertu Motors (AIM:VTU) reported robust trading for the half-year to the end-August. The car dealer expects profits for the year to be ahead of current market forecasts.

Topps Tiles also said it expects adjusted profits for the year to be towards the upper end of market expectations. Sales in the 13 weeks to 1 October were 4.3% higher year on year.

Shares in Omega Diagnostics surged 22% after a positive report from the World Health Organisation.

WHO issued a draft evaluation report for the Visitect CD4 advanced disease rapid test, an important milestone towards completing the pre-qualification stage.
