10.38am: First Class Metals jumps after Canadian gold mine deal
First Class Metals PLC (LSE:FCM) has unveiled a potential acquisition in Canada, and seen its shares move sharply higher.
The UK metals exploration company has agreed a deal with Nuinsco Resources Limited for the Sunbeam gold mining project in Ontario which operated from 1898-1905
Under the terms of the agreement, First Class will pay C$ 700,000 in three tranches over a period of eight months from the date of signing the deal.
It will undertake exploration related expenses on the property over a period of three years to value of C$750,000.
Once there is a report indicating a total resource of 500,000 ounces, there will be a payment of C$500,000.
The deal will be financed with a £1mln convertibel loan note from long-term shareholders Sanderson Capital Partners Ltd and Afzal Valli, while two existing investors will subscribe for £80,000 worth of shares.
Chief executive Marc Sale said: " This is a very positive, significant development for FCM, the purchase of Sunbeam presents an opportunity to develop a historical high grade gold mine. The old mine workings and the wider area have had limited modern exploration, however, the previous drilling and limited production uncovered very high-grade material. We believe with a structured well-planned period of exploration once all historic data has been assimilated this project could identify the untapped potential that exists across the entire claim area. FCM will embark on this process immediately post completion and I look forward to updating the market on future developments"
The company's shares are up 10.62% at 13.44p.
9.12am: BlueBird Merchant Ventures soars after major step forward at Philippines mining project
BlueBird Merchant Ventures Ltd (LSE:BMV) is flying high after it positive news from a Philippines mining project.
The company, which focuses on bringing historic mines back into production, said it had been granted a two year extension to the exploration period to its current 25-year agreements at the Batangas gold project.
The move will allow it to complete the remaining exploration and environmental work pProgrammes to increase the resource and rework the plan for the underground mining potential at the high-grade Lobo area of the project. Once this is completed, it can submit the declaration of mining project feasibility and gain an environmental compliance certificate, the last major prerequisite for underground gold production at Lobo.
The company also believes that the granting of the extension de-risks the project significantly, highlights the new governmental support for responsible mining projects and will enable the team to finalise discussions with a local partner to further develop Batangas for the benefit of all stakeholders.
Chief executive Colin Patterson said: "This is a major step forward and de-risks the development pathway to production significantly. The project was written off in the accounts due to the in-country situation, but now we have a high-grade project with excellent exploration and development upside, sunken exploration expenditure of around US$20mln, a supportive mining code and local partners interested in the project. We believe Batangas has excellent potential and look forward to enhancing the project, announcing regular news and converting its value into Bluebird's valuation, which at present levels is not happening.
"Beyond the Philippines, we continue to progress our South Korean projects, the Kochang Gold and Silver Mine and the Gubong Gold Mine. Both historic mines, closed in the 1970's when the gold price was below US$100 per ounce, offer exceptional opportunity to bring back into production and underpin our strategy of being a significant London listed gold producer with a valuation that reflects this."
Its shares have jumped 21.92% on the news to 1.52p.
