The Royal Mint released the new design of currency featuring the images of King Charles III which will enter circulation later this year.
His effigy will appear on a special £5 coin and 50p coin, with the image created by renowned British sculptor Martin Jennings, The Royal Mint said in a statement.
Charles will be facing left on the coins, in the opposite direction to Queen Elizabeth II, according to tradition.
Latin inscription will surround the image and translate to ‘King Charles III, by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith’.
The reverse of the 50p coin will pay tribute to the late Queen, featuring a design that originally appeared at her coronation in 1953, with four-quarters of the Royal Arms depicted within a shield.
In between each shield is an image which depicts the emblems of the home nations; a rose, a thistle, a shamrock and a leek, said The Royal Mint.
Charles’ image will also appear on a commemorative £5 coin, with the reverse featuring two new portraits of the late Queen.
£5 coins will “form part of a wider memorial coin collection, which will include a 50p released into general circulation in the UK”, said The Royal Mint.
“The Royal Mint has been trusted to make coins bearing the Monarch’s effigy for over 1,100 years and we are proud to continue this tradition into the reign of King Charles III,” said chief executive of The Royal Mint Anne Jessopp.
“Our team of skilled modellers, tool makers and engravers will ensure that the King’s effigy will be faithfully replicated onto millions of coins.”
