The 10 best performing fine wines posted an average return of 18% in September, with the fine wine alternative investment market seeing a year-to-date return of 25.3%, according to WineCap’s fine wine index, Wine Track.
Wines originating from Burgundy accounted for six of the top 10 strongest performers in September, including Puligny Montrachet Referts, Chassagne Montrachet Blanchot Dessus, and Nuits Saint Georges Clos Marechale Blanc, that saw returns of 27%, 18% and 13% respectively.
White wines, making up 60% of the Burgundy region’s production, are considerably more affordable than reds, accounting for much of Burgundy’s growth in volume.
Piedmont was the standout Italian region in September, with wines placing third and sixth in the top 10.
Barbaresco Pora Riserva saw a 20% month-on-month gain, whilst Barolo Cannubi S.Lorenzo Ravera rose 16%.
Dujac, Jacques Frederic Mugnier and Domaine Ponsot were among Wine Track’s fastest movers, which was also mostly made up of affordable Burgundian wines after an increase in labels being traded on the secondary market at more affordable price points.
Alexander Westgarth, CEO of fine wine investors WineCap, said, “right now we are seeing the biggest gains from the value-driven segment of the market”.
