Advanced Oncotherapy PLC (AIM:AVO) is “close to the finishing line” with its proton therapy machine, LIGHT, said research house Hardman, paving the way for more commercial deals.
By successfully producing a proton beam to 230 Mega electron-volt (MeV) from the system, Advanced Oncotherapy achieved a major milestone that “significantly de-risks the whole project, and provides comfort to potential customers regarding deliverability.”
University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), the group’s clinical partner, will now begin commissioning the treatment room, said Hardman.
As well as that, UHB will work with the proton-therapy company to coordinate some of the US and EU regulatory processes to achieve certification for LIGHT.
While the commissioning and validation process for treating patients is important and well-established, it can also be laborious and most of it is outside of Advanced Oncotherapy’s control, said Hardman.
Earlier this week, Advanced Oncotherapy said its first commercial LIGHT therapy system is fully operational for cancer treatment, having produced a proton beam at 230 megaelectron volts (MeV) at its assembly site in Daresbury, Cheshire.
