Starmer calls for Parliament to be recalled after Bank's intervention

A decision to recall Parliament is a decision for the Prime Minister alone and 24 hours notice is required so the earliest the House of Commons could meet is Friday.

Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party has called on Parliament to be recalled following the Bank of England’s intervention in the gilts market this morning.

He also said the Chancellor should abandon the mini-budget.

A decision to recall Parliament is a decision for the Prime Minister alone and 24 hours notice is required so the earliest the House of Commons could meet is Friday.

The Tories kick off their party conference next week and the financial turmoil is likely to dominate events.

Conservative MPs were not in a buoyant mood with one senior, unnamed MP saying, “Kwasi and Liz have to go. They have to, they are actually crashing the economy.”

The Prime Minister is yet to comment on the financial situation.
