The retailers that will be shut for business on Monday September 19, 2022, for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II have continued to rise day by day.
“Some businesses may wish to consider closing or postponing events, especially on the day of the state funeral, however, this is at the discretion of individual businesses,” the government has said.
Supermarket closures:
- Tesco: Large ones will be shut, with Tesco Express stores opening from 5.00pm until 10.00pm, while a few Central London and Windsor stores will remain operating as usual.
- J Sainsbury PLC (LSE:SBRY): The same as Tesco, except petrol stations will also open from 5.00pm to 10.00pm.
- Morrisons: All stores closed all-day
- Lidl: All stores closed all-day
- Aldi: All stores closed all-day
- Waitrose: All stores to be closed except a small number in London along the procession route
Shop closures:

Most shopping centres are expected to remain open, leaving the final decision to the individual retailers.
Leisure closures:
- Cineworld: All cinemas closed all-day
- Odeon: All cinemas closed all-day
- Showcase: All cinemas closed all-day
- Vue Cinemas: Films will be shown all day, with free screening of the funeral at many sites
- Hollywood Bowl: Closed until 1.00pm
- PureGym: Closed between 10.00am and 2.00pm
- Better: All gyms, libraries and other venues are closed all-day
Center Parcs reversed its decision to ask customers to leave its five UK sites for 24 hours from 10.00am on Monday. Its holiday resorts will remain open but new arrivals will be asked to arrive two hours later than usual at 5.00pm.
Pubs:
- Fullers Group: Most of its 400 pubs to remain open, with the firm insisting it is there to “provide a place for people to come together and pay their respects.”
- Greene King (LSE:GNK): All Central London pubs to remain open and the majority of those with TVs to broadcast the funeral.
- Wetherspoon: Pubs in Central London, rail stations and airports to operate as usual, but most will open later than usual.
- JW Lees: All 44 pubs to stay open
Other:
McDonald's: To shut its approximately 1,300 UK outlets until 5.00pm.
High-end steak restaurant Hawksmoor, meanwhile, complained that businesses should not be pressured to close “out of respect” for the Queen. Hawksmoor, which runs 10 restaurants in London, Manchester and Edinburgh, confirmed that it intends to keep all sites open on Monday, apart from its Guildhall one in the City of London that always shuts on public holidays.
Royal Mail will suspend its postal services.
