Heathrow Airport passenger numbers jump but still shy of pre-pandemic levels

Staff shortages prompted the airport to restrict daily departures earlier this year

Heathrow, the UK's busiest airport, recorded a more than threefold increase in passengers this August but still lagged pre-pandemic numbers.

Some 6mln passengers passed through the London airport's terminals last month compared with 2.2mln last August.

However, it is still below the pre-coronavirus total of 7.7mln passengers the airport recorded in August 2019.

Earlier this year the airport announced it would limit the number of departures due to staff shortages after passengers across the UK faced months of travel chaos due to flight cancellations and long waits at check-in, security and baggage collection.

In response to the introduction of the cap in July, Heathrow claims there have been fewer last-minute cancellations, more punctual flights, and shorter waiting times for bags.

Airlines, however, blame the airport for failing to prepare for a rebound in passenger traffic following the pandemic.
