Ondine Biomedical Inc (AIM:OBI) has said it will tell delegates at a conference that its photodisinfection technology is effective against antibiotic-resistant bacteria known as ESKAPE pathogens.
As the name suggests, these are six pathogens that exhibit multidrug resistance and virulence: Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp.
Results of the study showed that Ondine's approach, which involves applying a solution to each nostril that is activated by laser light, eliminated all ESKAPE pathogens 'with a high degree of efficacy, without provoking resistance'.
The findings will be presented to the World Anti-Microbial Resistance Congress, in Maryland, starting Tuesday (September 7, 2022).
“We also demonstrated this in biofilm - the tough polymeric matrix surrounding bacterial colonies making them very difficult to attack, along with specialised dormant cells called persister cells that cause long-term recalcitrant infections,” said Dr Nicolas Loebel, Ondine chief technology officer.
“We believe photodisinfection can play a significant role in combatting these drug-resistant pathogens and reducing global reliance on antibiotics."
On Monday, results from a phase II trial revealed a five-minute Ondine treatment eliminated or significantly decreased the incidence of Staphylococcus aureus in 92% of the pre-surgical patients treated.
S. aureus is the pathogen most associated with surgical site infections.
