Ondine Biomedical Inc (AIM:OBI) said it now has further clinical support for its process of using nasal photodisinfection to reduce post-operative complications caused by infection.
The method involves applying a solution to each nostril that is activated by laser light.
In a phase II trial carried out by Ondine, a five-minute treatment eliminated or significantly decreased the incidence of Staphylococcus aureus in 92% of the pre-surgical patients treated. S. aureus is the pathogen most associated with surgical site infections.
The company revealed that as well as hitting its primary goal, there were no reportable adverse events.
Ondine chief executive Carolyn Cross told investors: "As expected, photodisinfection had a strong antimicrobial outcome, which we believe, from our Canadian hospital experiences, will be beneficial to pre-surgical patients.
“Concluding our phase II trial is a key milestone that satisfies our IPO commitment and puts us firmly on the path towards completing the US FDA regulatory process."
The BENEFIT-aPDT open-label study was carried out at HCA Healthcare's Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia, where 319 patients were treated.
