EasyJet apologises for blaming delays on snow in August

Passengers attempted to claim compensation following an over three-hour delay on 15 August, with the temperature reaching 23C that day in Jersey

Easyjet PLC has apologised to passengers after telling them their August flight from Jersey to London Gatwick was delayed due to snow being cleared from the runway.

Passengers attempted to claim compensation following a more than three-hour delay on 15 August but were told it was due to exceptional circumstances outside of easyJet’s control,

Declining their claim the airline said: “To further explain what happened on the day, Jersey had to close its runway for snow clearance, resulting in flights holding overhead for extended periods or having to divert to alternative airports."

Furious customers pointed out that the temperature had reached 23C that day with teh Channel Island also recording its second “absolute drought” (14 days with no rain) of the year earlier in the month.

The budget airline later blamed “human error,” saying the flight was was actually delayed by “poor weather conditions and fog.”

“Our operations control centre manually logs the reason for the delay in our system and so this was as a result of human error,” easyJet said.

easyJet has been cancelling flights all year due to staff shortages both of flight crew and at airports it uses.

Shares rose 1.5% to 359.4p on Tuesday afternoon.
