Elon Musk’s SpaceX will join with T-Mobile US to allow users in the US to access the 'space internet' service via their mobile phones.
Musk said in an event on Thursday that SpaceX would use its Starlink satellites to create a new network with T-Mobile.
The new plans would exist alongside the mobile carrier’s existing network and eliminate the need for cell towers.
Users will be able to send texts and images where cell coverage does not currently exist, Musk also said at the event, as reported by Reuters.
Most T-Mobile phones will be compatible with the new service, with a beta phase beginning by the end of 2023.
Since 2019, SpaceX has launched nearly 3,000 of its low-Earth orbiting (160km-1000km) Starlink satellites, outpacing competitors Amazon and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space programme.
SpaceX is of the top-10 holdings in Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust PLC (LSE:SMT).
