Hungry investors more than double capital raised in 2022 financial year

A third year of COVID-19 cases did little to dampen investor appetite as ASX-listed companies made hay while the sun shone.

More than $255 billion in capital was raised by ASX companies throughout the 2022 financial year — 149% more than in 2021.

The ASX doesn’t give exact figures, but it was at least $255,327,000,000 — an eye-watering number by any stretch of the imagination.

The month of June saw $21.6 billion raised, up 35% on the previous June, although the vast majority of that — $20.8 billion — was raised via secondary markets.

FY22 a boon year

The amount of initial capital raised in the 2022 financial year grew 45% year-on-year, up to $58.9 billion, while secondary capital skyrocketed 217% to $196.5 billion.

The total value of the cash market on the ASX very nearly broached $2 trillion at $1.969 trillion, up 17% year-on-year, despite one less day of trading for the year.

The futures took a slight hit, with 136.5 million total contracts traded, down 5% on the year before.

Similarly, over-the-counter (OTC) markets fell 11% year-on-year, with $4.6 billion in notional value cleared.

In equity options markets, 60.2 million total single stock equity options contracts were traded, up 6%, and 5.9 million total index options contracts were traded, up 11%.

In exchange-traded markets, $1.8 billion in total billable cash market value was cleared, up 14%.

There were 2,314 listed entities by the end of the financial year, up 4% on the end of June 2021.
