PlantX's XMarket stores partner with Too Good To Go to reduce food waste

Stores like XMarket are required to remove products from their shelves that have passed their sell-by date, but Too Good To Go helps sell those products at reduced prices before they go to waste

PlantX Life Inc announced that it has partnered with Too Good To Go, an app that aims to reduce food waste by helping stores and restaurants sell leftover food that would otherwise go to waste at reduced prices.

Too Good To Go, which the company called the world’s largest marketplace for selling surplus food, partners with more than 160,000 stores in 17 countries. Now, three more have been added to that tally: the XMarket stores in Chicago, Toronto and Ottawa.

More locations are expected to be announced as well, PlantX said.

"The plant-based lifestyle is about sustainability and working with the planet, reducing carbon emissions and eliminating waste," PlantX CEO Lorne Rapkin said in a statement. "Our growing relationship with Too Good To Go is a key part of this important initiative.”

Essentially, stores like XMarket are required to remove products from their shelves that have passed their sell-by date. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they’ve gone bad.

“Expiration dates are not the end of the useful life of a product,” Rapkin said. “While we may be required to remove certain products from our retail shelves after an expiration date, many of these products are still useful and this relationship helps us deliver healthy, plant-based food to consumers affordably."

Too Good To Go works by providing users with a list of stores and restaurants and specific time slots that food is available for pickup. Users typically pay reduced prices for what is called a “surprise bag,” so they don’t know ahead of time what items they’ll receive.
