Uber Technologies Inc (NYSE:UBER) posted all-time high gross bookings in its second-quarter update and said it expects to break that figure in the third quarter, although net losses amounted to US$2.6bn.
Gross bookings grew 33% year-over-year to US$29.1bn, while revenue grew 105% to US$8.1bn.
This resulted from monthly active platform customers climbing 21% from a year earlier to 122mln, including 1.87bn Uber passenger trips during the quarter, or an average of close to 21mln trips per day.
Free cash flow reached US$382mln in the second quarter, up by US$780mln from a negative position last year.
“Last quarter, I challenged our team to meet our profitability commitments even faster than planned- and they delivered,” said CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.
He expects third-quarter bookings of between US$29bn and US$30bn, while adjusted underlying earnings (EBITDA) are expected to be between US$440mln and US$470mln.
Shares in Uber soared 14% on the open of markets in America, rising to US$28.23.
