Aldi announces second pay rise this year

UK employers are offering pay increases to keep a hold of staff amid the tight labour market and accelerating prices

Aldi dished out its second pay rise this year to its store staff as employers grapple to keep a hold of workers.

From September, 26,000 store assistances will receive a minimum of £10.50 an hour, while staff in London will earn £11.95 per hour, respectively a 4% and 3.5% increase.

Those figures are higher than the minimum wage, which is £9.18 outside of London and £11.05 in the capital.

In February, the discount retailer upped its wages to £10.10 from £9.55 outside of London and to £11.55 from £11.07 in London.

UK employers are offering pay increases to keep a hold of staff amid the tight labour market and accelerating prices.

Sainsbury’s increased the basic hourly rate for its staff in January to £10 an hour from £9.50, while Tesco staff will also receive a pay rise from this week by 5.8%, which was announced back in April, earning £10.10 an hour, up from £9.55.

From October, Morrisons will increase the wage for more than 80,000 members of staff by 2% to £10.20.

Fellow discount retailer Lidl increased wages back in March, with its staff earning up to £11.40 in its entry-level positions.
