Boris Johnson resigns as Prime Minister

An official statement was made shortly after midday after reports first broke this morning

Primer Minister Boris Johnson confirmed his exit from 10 Downing Street and leader of the Conservative Party after a speech given shortly after midday on Thursday.

Johnson said, in his relatively short speech, that it was clearly the will of the parliamentary party that there should be a new leader and new prime minister.

A timetable for the leadership contest will be announced next week, with Johnson remaining in charge until a someone is elected, likely not until the autumn.

Earlier today, reports said Johnson was set to resign and leave his position after more than 50 resignations from the government, including several Cabinet ministers.

Following this raft of resignations in his government in his last two days, including Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak and Secretary of State of Health and Social Care Sajid Javid, Johnson finally succumbed to the pressure.
