Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) will launch a fleet of e-cargo bikes and a team of on-foot delivery staff to replace van deliveries in some of London's ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ) postcodes where a fee is charged for driving the most polluting vehicles.
A new ‘micro-mobility’ hub will be opened in Hackney and will contribute, alongside an existing fleet of electric vehicles, roughly 5mln deliveries a year across a tenth of low emissions zones, the Guardian reported.
The bikes will be operated by various partner businesses rather than Amazon directly, the paper said.
Amazon plans for similar delivery hubs around the UK this year as part of its efforts to cut carbon emissions.
Back in 2020, the online retailer was named as the partner for a cargo bike and on-foot delivery hub in the City of London but the project has yet to come to fruition.
“Our new e-cargo bikes, walkers and growing electric vehicle delivery fleet will help us make more zero emission customer deliveries than ever before across London and the UK in the coming months,” John Boumphrey, UK country manager for Amazon, told the Guardian.
