Bulgaria's self-styled ‘Crypto Queen’ Ruja Ignatova joins the FBI's most-wanted list

Ignatova, also a German citizen, was behind a US$4bn cryptocurrency scam called 'OneCoin'

The FBI has added Ruja Ignatova to its 10 Most Wanted fugitives list for her alleged role in defrauding investors out of US$4bn via a fake cryptocurrency called OneCoin.

As a reward, the FBI has offered US$100,000 to help arrest the self-styled Crypto Queen Ignatova, founder of OneCoin.

After raising billions of dollars in the fraudulent virtual currency ponzi scheme between 2014 and 2016, Ignatova disappeared in 2017.

Court documents said she marketed the coin to friends and family.

Officials claimed OneCoin was not supported by secure, independent blockchain technology like other cryptocurrencies.

In 2019, Ignatova was charged with eight counts of wire and securities fraud for allegedly scamming investors.

The ponzi scheme was described by prosecutors as one of the largest in history, with the company paying its members commissions so other people would buy a useless cryptocurrency.
