The UK will not reach its net zero targets as the government is failing to enact the policies needed to achieve the goal, a report warned,
The Climate Change Committee (CCC, an independent body established to advise the UK on climate change, also voiced fears ministers may go back on the legally binding commitment to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Lord Deben, who chairs the committee and is a former Conservative environment secretary, said the government set strong targets but current policy is failing to achieve them.
He added net-zero policies would also help with the soaring cost of living crisis, citing that average household bills would be £125 lower if previous plans on green energy had been followed through.
“If you want to deal with the cost-of-living crisis, this is exactly what you need to do,” he is quoted as saying in The Guardian.
Deben also hit out at proposals for a new coal mine in Cumbria, with a decision expected on 7 July over whether it goes ahead.
