Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) has closed its office in San Mateo, California, laying off about 200 workers as part of wider cost-cutting programme, Bloomberg News reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
Workers at the San Mateo facility evaluated customer vehicle data related to the Autopilot driver-assistance system.
The majority of job losses were among the hourly workers, even though chief executive Elon Musk recently said the electric-vehicle maker would increase the number of hourly jobs as he outlined plans to cut 10% of salaried staff.
Prior to the cuts, the office had about 350 employees, some of whom were already transferred to a nearby facility in recent weeks, Bloomberg reported.
One employee told CNBC that many of the staff in San Mateo had expected to be moved to Palo Alto or to another office, but not to lose their jobs.
