A US senator, Cynthia Lummis had a unique way to further develop her upcoming cryptocurrency regulation bill - she turned for help via GitHub, a digital repository hosting service - though most of the responses were not that helpful.
"You can now contribute comments on my bill establishing a framework for digital assets with (Sen Gillibrand),” Lummis wrote in a tweet sharing the news.
"Civil comments and criticisms welcome. Please share widely. We want to get this right. Help us iterate publicly on policy."
Senators Lummis and Kirsten Gillibrand uploaded the full text of their Responsible Financial Innovation Act on the Microsoft-owned open source repository GitHub, looking for public feedback.
The GitHub platform provides a number of tools for creating public proposals - including the ability to post comments.
The Senators were asked to "increase the value of proof-of-work cryptocurrencies with a tax on mining", while another thread raised concerns about algorithmic backing for stablecoins.
Trolling also extended to commit requests, where one user suggested replacing the bill with the source code for the popular first-person shooter Doom.
Another response to the request said if Doom's source code were substituted for the text of this bill, it would do far more to benefit everyday Americans.
Although it's a comprehensive attempt by US Congress so far to clarify the often-confusing and controversial world of cryptocurrency, several Senate committees would need to approve the bill before it can be voted on by the full Senate floor and become law.
