Amazon has warned that a UK online sales tax would unfairly punish small businesses that use its platform.
John Boumphrey, Amazon's UK country manager, told a government roundtable yesterday that a 1% levy will hit the SMEs that sell products on its platform.
Other online sellers also attended the summit, with Ebay, too, warning that a sales tax would have a detrimental impact on business for its users, Sky News reported.
Other attendees included Just Eat Takeaway, ASOS and Currys, according to the report.
A spokesman told Sky that a decision on whether to go ahead with the tax had not yet been taken.
"The purpose of the recent consultation was to consider the design options and economic impacts of such a tax and explore the arguments for and against."
Traditional retailers meanwhile have continued with their calls for a complete overhaul of the business rates system.
The Retail Jobs Alliance (RJA) this week said a reduction in rates for all retailers would result in a tax cut for 197,000 shops across the country.
It wants reduced business rates for retail to be funded by an online sales tax, having complained for years that the system is skewed in favour of online.
