Mercedes-Benz is to recall nearly a million vehicles over problems with the braking system.
The automaker's shares dropped by about 0.8% this morning before recovering.
Germany's federal motor transport authority said the recall affected cars of the 2004 to 2015 vintage, including the SUV series ML and Gl and the R-Class minivan.
Mercedes-Benz, formerly known as Daimler (ETR:DAI), said it would begin the recall “immediately” and reach out to owners of affected vehicles, inspect them and replace parts if necessary.
“In rare cases of very severe corrosion, it might be possible for a particularly strong or hard braking manoeuvre to cause mechanical damage to the brake booster, whereby the connection between the brake pedal and brake system would fail,” the carmaker said on Saturday.
It made the statement after the German transport authority warned that wear to the brake booster system used in its vehicles could disconnect the brake pedal from the braking system and lead to a brake malfunction.
Mercedes is the latest automaker to be hit by brake issues after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received hundreds of complaints about a phantom braking problem with Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s vehicles, which prompted the authority to question the company about the issue.
The traffic safety body launched a probe into Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in February.
