Sovereign Metals establishes ESG framework to advance social initiatives in Malawi

"The future development of the Kasiya Rutile Project will bring substantial benefits to Malawi in terms of GDP, royalties, taxes, employment and training, local business opportunities and community development," says MD Dr Julian Stephens.

Sovereign Metals Ltd (ASX:SVM, AIM:SVML) has established an environmental, social and governance (ESG) framework to guide and advance the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts in Malawi, home to its flagship Kasiya rutile deposit.

Sovereign is undertaking several development initiatives to assist Malawi and its local communities, looking to become an industry leader in its corporate social responsibility to the nation through its ESG framework.

The company is promoting education through a Schools Upgrade Program and the creation of a Scholarship Program for high school learners and advancing local infrastructure with the construction of a new community centre at Malingunde and commissioning of water bores across licensed tenure to provide drinking water.

In addition, Sovereign says it has established international-standard mining industry facilities with the construction of a rutile sample laboratory in Lilongwe and employed a diverse workforce, developing key exploration and mining-related skills through a training program.

Kasiya development supports community

“Over the last decade Sovereign has worked very hard to establish and maintain a strong and positive social licence to operate in Malawi,” Sovereign Metals managing director Dr Julian Stephens said.

“The future development of the Kasiya Rutile Project will bring substantial benefits to Malawi in terms of GDP, royalties, taxes, employment and training, local business opportunities and community development.

“In advancing Kasiya, Sovereign will strive to become a leading socially responsible corporate.”

An updated scoping study incorporating the recently upgraded resource at Kasiya is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
