Albert Labs International Corp (CSE:ABRT) has announced that it is carrying out safety and toxicology studies in partnership with the University of CESPU Health Sciences Department in Portugal to lay the groundwork for its upcoming real world evidence studies slated to start later this year.
The company said research would provide essential data on its mycelium-based pharmaceutical products in support of its upcoming clinical trials investigating the potential of its psilocybin-based product candidate KRN-101 to treat cancer-related distress.
The pre-clinical studies are being led by toxicologist Ricardo Jorge Dinis-Oliveira to clarify the toxicological, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of Albert Labs' proprietary mycelium derived active pharmaceutical ingredients (API).

Dinis-Oliveira said he and his team would ensure that KRN-101 met all the necessary safety evaluations prior to patient administration in the upcoming trial.
“We also expect to publish the outcomes of our work and bolster the already abundant safety data available in published literature surrounding psilocybin,” Dinis-Oliveira said in a statement.
Albert Labs CEO Michael Raymont noted that the partnership with Dinis-Oliveira and his team at CESPU adds to the company’s skillset as an “end-to-end” drug development company.
“Preclinical studies such as these are a crucial step for any drug development cycle and through this collaboration, we have been able to bring this capability and value in-house,” Raymont said.
