The Queen's Speech and the chairman of Tesco PLC (LSE:TSCO) both called for help for households from the cost of living crisis.
Using the speech, which was delivered by Prince Charles in the absence of the 96-year-old Queen Elizabeth, the government promised "grow and strengthen the economy and help ease the cost of living for families" using various new measures.
However, as opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer pointed out, the Queen's Speech was "bereft of ideas" on how to ease price pressures as energy and shopping bills continue to soar.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he and Chancellor Rishi Sunak will be "saying more" on the matter in coming days.
Also today, Tesco chairman John Allan said there is an “overwhelming case” for a windfall tax on energy companies to raise money to help families pay for sky-high energy bills.
He told the BBC some Tesco customers have started rationing the amount of food they buy at the supermarket, with the country facing “real food poverty for the first time in a generation”.
Now we just have to ask the bosses of Shell PLC (LSE:SHEL, NYSE:SHEL) and BP PLC (LSE:BP.) if they think Tesco should lower their shop prices.
