Centrica lifts full-year guidance but warns of increased bad debts

We're not even halfway through the year yet but already Centrica feels confident enough to guide towards the top end of full-year forecasts

Centrica PLC (LSE:CNA) expects full-year adjusted earnings per share will be around the top of the range of more recent analyst forecasts.

The energy provider, which owns British Gas and Scottish Gas, said it had delivered a strong operational performance in the first four months of 2022.

It did warn, however, of the possibility of increased bad debt charges as higher energy costs and rising inflation begins to hit UK households.

In its British Gas Services & Solutions business, the group has seen some supply chain disruption and higher inflation affecting both the cost base and customer demand. It expects those headwinds will continue to partially offset underlying operational progress during the period of higher inflation.

On the plus side, volumes from its nuclear and gas production assets in the UK have been strong and its Energy Marketing & Trading business has both secured increased volumes of gas and renewable energy to improve the UK and Europe's security of supply and managed increased commodity price volatility well, supporting performance in British Gas Energy, the FTSE 250 company said.
