Horizonte Minerals PLC (AIM:HZM, TSX:HZM, OTC:HZMMF), a nickel development company focused in Brazil, said it appointed Philipa Varris as head of sustainability with immediate effect.
Varris has held leadership positions in sustainability and environmental, social and governance (ESG) management in the mining sector for more than 25 years, mainly in Africa and Australasia and across a number of commodities.
She holds an MSc in natural resources and is a chartered environmental professional.
Varris has led teams that have won awards from the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) for environment and social responsibility, the AMEEF for environmental excellence, and Mines and Money for ESG producer of the year, amongst others.
She joins the company's growing senior management team in London and will also work closely with the teams at the company’s two tier one projects in Brazil: the Araguaia nickel project and the Vermelho nickel-cobalt project.
"We are delighted to welcome Philipa to Horizonte's senior management team,” said chief executive Jeremy Martin. “With her significant experience in the mining industry, Philipa will work across all levels of the company to further integrate leading ESG practices into every aspect of Horizonte's business.”
