Centamin PLC (LSE:CEY, TSX:CEE, OTC:CELTF) reported a 13% increase in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions in 2021, but the gold producer said it would set out its climate change strategy this year.
Scope 1 emissions are those made by a company directly, while Scope 2 emissions are those a company is responsible for such as the energy produced on its behalf.
“In 2022, we will set out a climate change strategy that will set an ambitious science-based target for carbon reduction by 2030 and one that strives to align with a trajectory of emission reduction to net-zero by 2050,” said chief executive Martin Horgan in the miner’s fifth annual sustainability report.
“We are already implementing a number of key projects that will reduce our carbon footprint, including the solar power plant project that is due to be commissioned in H2 2022," he said.
Construction of the 36MW hybrid solar project at its flagship Sukari operation in Egypt is expected to reduce diesel fuel consumption by an estimated 20 million litres per year and lower carbon emissions by 15% across the group, Centamin said.
It announced zero fatalities in 2021 and a large reduction in injuries and time lost due to injuries.
