Advanced Oncotherapy PLC (AIM:AVO) said it has made significant progress with its LIGHT proton beam therapy system as it confirmed the kit will be operational in the summer.
AVO has developed a method of delivering the life-saving cancer treatment on a much smaller scale than the current technology, which can take up an area the size of a football pitch and might be three stories high.
The company expects to install its equipment in the basement of a specially designed clinic on London's Harley Street.
In an update, AVO said its 230 megaelectron volts (MeV) LIGHT system beam had been successfully optimised to a sub-millimetre size, while 20 of the 21 accelerating modules it uses have been radio frequency conditioned.
“We are pleased to see positive data on the performance of the machine's beam, in line with our computer simulations, outlining the superior profile of the LIGHT proton beam,” said chief executive Nicolas Serandour.
AVO’s technology was spun out of work carried out at CERN, in Switzerland, the atomic energy research group looking for the ‘God particle’.
