Extinction Rebellion protest blocks Lloyd’s building; demands end to fossil fuels insurance

Protesters blocked entrances with chains, superglue and bike locks as part of a climate protest

Lloyd’s of London, the centre of the UK insurance business, was shut down today following an attack by protesters calling for an end to climate change.

The historic insurance marketplace had to down shutters after Extinction Rebellion protesters targeted it, using superglue, chains and bike locks to block entrances.

The protest group is calling for Lloyd's of London to cease insuring fossil fuel projects.

In the wake of the demonstrations, Lloyd's advised employees not to come to the building but said trading would continue online.

Extinction Rebellion said more than 60 protestors participated with some scaling the outside of Lloyd's to display banners reading 'End Fossil Fuels Now' and 'Ensure Climate Justice'.

The protest is the latest by Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil, which shut down Tower Bridge last week and disrupted key oil terminals across the country.

"We are here to demand an end to fossil fuel insurance and investments. The underwriting of the world's most deadly fossil fuel projects is causing climate chaos, causing floods, famines, wildfires, and death," Extinction Rebellion spokesperson Clare Walmsley told the BBC.

"The cost of living crisis will not be resolved by insuring new oil and gas projects in the North Sea. Instead, it locks us into a system that already pushes millions into poverty."
