Twitter shares soar as Elon Musk takes 9.2% stake

The high profile billionaire has acquired a material stake in the social media platform.

News that Elon Musk has become one of Twitter Inc's (NYSE:TWTR)’s largest shareholder has sent the social media share some 25% ahead of Monday’s open.

Tesla and Space X boss Musk has bought a 9.2% interest in Twitter, according to a stock market filing.

In New York, Twitter shares raced up US$9.56 or 24.3% to US$39.31 after the first reports of the rocketman’s investment.

The billionaire-entrepreneur-come-Twitter-celebrity has in recent weeks publicly questioned Twitter’s policies in regard to free speech.

It also comes after Musk’s row with the US Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) over information he tweeted about Tesla.
