It would probably not be that hard, but most private investors could probably guess at least a few of the most popular investment trusts with ISA millionaires.
Investment trusts were revealed to be a key ingredient in the success of a large proportion of ISA millionaires.
While it is the largest in terms of market cap, Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust PLC (LSE:SMT) is not currently the most popular investment for many of the ISA millionaires, not on the Interactive Investor (ii) platform anyway.
It was trumped in first place by Alliance Trust PLC.
These were two of the three trusts among the top ten holdings for ISA millionaires on the ii platform, with Witan Investment Trust plc (LSE:WTAN) being the third.
Overall, investment companies accounted for the largest weighting in the average ISA millionaire's portfolio at 46% on the ii platform, compared to 38.3% for shares and 7.6% for open-ended funds, while at Hargreaves Lansdown over 70% of ISA millionaires currently hold at least one trust in their ISA.
Scottish Mortgage and Witan also feature among the most popular trusts for ISA millionaires at HL, which has 973 customers who have reached seven-figure savings versus 983 at ii.
The rest of the top ten investment trusts held by HL's ISA millionaires were, in alphabetical order, BlackRock World Mining Trust PLC, City of London Investment Trust, Edinburgh Worldwide Investment Trust, F&C Investment Trust (LSE:FCIT) plc, Fidelity China Special Situations PLC (LSE:FCSS), Finsbury Growth & Income Trust Plc, JP Morgan Emerging Markets Investment Trust, Monks Investment Trust PLC and RIT Capital Partners (LSE:RCP).
There are also, according to data from the Association of Investment Companies (AIC), a total of 30 investment trusts that could have made investors more than £1mln if the full annual ISA allowance had been invested assiduously in the same company each year.
Top five were HgCapital Trust, the aforementioned Scottish Mortgage, Allianz Technology Trust PLC, Pacific Horizon Investment Trust and Polar Capital Technology Trust PLC.
