Electric vehicle charging points will rise tenfold by the end of the decade, the Department for Transport said.
The government’s new Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy will increase the UK’s charge points from 30,000 to 300,000 by 2030.
“We’re powering ahead with plans to help British people go electric, with our expanding charging network making journeys easier right across the country,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.
The scheme, which will cost approximately £500mln, will help drivers with no access to off-street parking, as well as on fast charging for longer journeys.
“No matter where you live – be that a city centre or rural village, the north, south, east or west of the country, we’re powering up the switch to electric and ensuring no-one gets left behind in the process,” Grant Shapps, Transport Secretary, commented
Meanwhile, the Rapid Charging Fund will install over 6,000 rapid charge points on England’s motorways by 2035.
The sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles will be banned in the UK from 2030.
