Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) is testing a new feature that would spell the end of password sharing between different households.
Trials are being conducted in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru, of technology that charges people who add multiple profiles to an account.
Chengyi Long, director of product innovation, said in a statement that standard and premium plans that allow separate profiles have been “hugely popular”, but have also created “confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared.”
According to Long, this has come at a cost of investing in new TV and film projects.
Members will be able to add up to two accounts for people they do not live with, each with their own password and login, at a cost of 2380 Chilean pesos, US$2.99 in Costa Rica, and 7.9 sol in Peru.
Paying members will also be able to transfer their account information to new or extra member subs-account.
In January, Netflix raised its prices for the second time in two years, with its most popular subscription climbing from US$14 to US$15.50.
