Tharisa starts testing 3 Liebherr mining machines to help it reduce carbon emissions

The two mining trucks and the dozer will be fully stress-tested under operational conditions for 18 months

Tharisa PLC (LSE:THS, JSE:THA) said three Liebherr mining machines with more efficient engines and fuel systems have been delivered to its Tharisa mine, as part of the company’s commitment to reduce its carbon emissions, and that operational testing has started.

The two mining trucks and the dozer will be fully stress-tested under operational conditions for 18 months to see if they can withstand the climatic and geomorphological makeup of the hard rock mining at the mine in South Africa’s Bushveld Complex.

The platinum group metals (PGMs) and chrome co-producer said the partnership with Liebherr is part of Tharisa's ESG initiative to lower its carbon footprint.

"Our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint by 30% by 2030 and becoming net carbon neutral by 2050 is in action and includes using efficient technology,” said Tebogo Matsimela, head of ESG at Tharisa.

“When we announced our targets, we already had an action plan in place and the intention to meet, if not exceed, our 2030 target.”
