Amazon ends dispute with Visa over use of credit cards

Visa credit card transactions accounted for about £1.4bn of Amazon's net sales in the UK last year, according to the Independent newspaper

Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) said it reached an agreement with Visa (NYSE:V) Inc that allows customers to continue to use their Visa (NYSE:V) credit cards across all of its online sites and stores.

Last November, the online retail giant said its UK business would stop accepting payments from the card issuer because of the high transaction fees charged, although last month Amazon delayed the proposed ban and said it was working to find a solution.

Amazon said it will no longer charge an extra fee for customers who use Visa cards on its site in Singapore and Australia.

Visa credit card transactions accounted for about £1.4bn of Amazon's net sales in the UK last year, according to the Independent newspaper.

The UK’s payment regulator has said it would be willing to consider additional regulation to protect consumers and businesses from rising card payment prices.

The regulator told the Treasury Committee it had not seen evidence the costs of operating payment services have increased for card issuers to warrant the recent increase in fees.
