Ferrexpo appoints iron ore veteran as permanent chief executive

As CEO, North published a formal shareholder returns policy, inaugural carbon reduction targets, and announced the wave one expansion which will add a further three million tonnes of pellet capacity

Ferrexpo PLC (LSE:FXPO) said it permanently appointed Jim North as chief executive officer (CEO) with immediate effect.

North was named acting CEO in May 2020. Prior to that, he was the chief operating officer for the third-largest exporter of high-grade iron ore pellets to the global steel industry.

“During his time as acting CEO, Jim has shown an adept ability to refocus the group's strategy, further promote an inclusive leadership model, deliver a clear message on key topics relevant to stakeholders, whilst also continuing to deliver strong operational performance across the group,” Lucio Genovese, chair, said.

As temporary CEO, North enhanced the effectiveness of the company’s operations in Ukraine, a statement said.

He also secured Ferrexpo’s first long-term contract for higher grade direct reduction pellets, despite operating within coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions.

North also published a formal shareholder returns policy, inaugural carbon reduction targets, and announced the wave one expansion which will add a further three million tonnes of pellet capacity – all of which were implemented for a low-carbon future.

North previously held several senior management roles with Rio Tinto and BHP before joining Ferrexpo.
