Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is now holding US$1.99bln worth of Bitcoin, a US regulatory filing has confirmed.
The carmaker said it had invested around US$1.5bn in Bitcoin during 2021 and “the fair market value” of its holdings was US$1.99bn, it said in a document issued to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
In the filing, Tesla kept its crypto options open, saying it “may increase or decrease our holdings of digital assets at any time based on the needs of the business and on our view of market and environmental conditions”.
Boss Elon Musk revealed in March last year that it had bought the digital currency, shortly after the electric car manufacturer said it would accept payments of its vehicles with the tokens.
Tesla reversed its decision just two months later, with Musk saying Tesla would resume Bitcoin payments when the cryptocurrency gets greener.
Tesla is yet to reintroduce Bitcoin as a valid form of payment, although it is allowing customers to buy some merchandise using Dogecoin.
