The first fully electric vehicles from Bentley will be developed and built at the company's plant in north-west England in 2025, it says.
Bentley, which is now owned by Volkswagen, is investing £2.5bn in the transformation of all Bentley vehicles to electric at its base in Crewe, Cheshire.
The company said in 2020 that its aim is to end the production of internal combustion engine cars and its operations to be fully carbon neutral by 2030, the same year the government plans to end the sale of new petrol-powered cars.
Adrian Hallmark, Bentley’s chairman and chief executive, said: “Securing production of our first BEV in Crewe is a milestone moment for Bentley, and the UK, as we plan for a long-term sustainable future in Crewe.”
Bentley said it plans to initially switch to making hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), before adding fully electric cars.
