British Gas takes on 176,000 customers from failed supplier Together Energy

British Gas has taken on around 700,000 customers from failed suppliers since the crisis started

British Gas, the retail arm of Centrica PLC, is to take on the 176,000 customers supplied by failed energy group Together, regulator Ofgem announced today.

"Centrica is in a robust financial position, and as a responsible energy supplier built on a sustainable model we are well hedged for the winter and beyond," Chris O'Shea, the company’s chief executive, added in a statement.

Ofgem said any account credits of Together Energy Retail customers would also be protected.

That switch means British Gas will have taken on around 700,000 customers from failed suppliers since the power crisis started to materialise.

Customers from Simplicity Energy, PfP Energy, MoneyPlus Energy and People’s Energy are now all supplied by British Gas, Centrica said.

In total, around 27 independent energy suppliers have collapsed since the beginning of September due to the surge in gas costs and the restrictions on passing these onto customers due to Ofgem's price cap.
