Another 29 multinationals are to be challenged on their greenhouse gas reduction plans by the Dutch climate group that won a landmark legal battle against Shell last year.
Milieudefensie, the Dutch arm of Friends of the Earth, is targeting businesses domiciled in the Netherlands after the ruling in a court in the Hague last year that Shell must cut its emissions by 45% by 2030.
Letters have now been sent by Milieudefensie to the heads of 29 other companies demanding they follow suit, with a threat of legal action if they don’t, a spokesman for the group told Reuters.
Shell is also still being targeted by the activist group though after the court case it did not receive a letter.
"We are very clear that in the end, if needed, we are willing to go to court. But of course we are hoping these companies will be moving by themselves," Milieudefensie's Peter De Rijk told the newswire.
Shell is appealing against the court's decision, which ordered it to cut emissions in line with the 2015 Paris agreement.
The oil and gas giant also recently decided to shift its domicile to the UK.
Other firms on the list include are airline KLM, the bank ABN Amro and supermarket chain Ahold Delhaize, Reuters reported.
