Donald Trump’s social media app to launch in February

Trump intends for the app to be a competitor to Twitter

Truth Social, the new social media platform being launched by Donald Trump, is slated to go live next month.

The app is being developed by Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), which raised US$1bn from private investors last month, and is due to launch on February 21, according to an Apple App Store listing.

Trump intends for the app to be a competitor to Twitter and "stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech".

Once live, the app will allow the former US President to make a social media post for the first time in thirteen months, after he was banned by both Twitter and Facebook.

The app will, according to publicised screenshots, offer features to follow people and topics, similar to Twitter.

TMTG envisages a launch and scale-up over three stages, with the second reportedly set to be a subscription video-on-demand service called TMTG+ that which would provide news, entertainment, and podcasts.

This subscription service is planned to launch on the US Presidents’ Day holiday, and, will be available for pre-order prior to launch.

The TMTG vehicle is valued at US$4.3bn, based on the stock price of Digital World Acquisition Corp, a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) with which it has agreed a merger.

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chair, Gary Gensler, investigated the merger for violations of security laws surrounding disclosure, following a request from US Senator Elizabeth Warren in December, but has failed to comment since on whether it intends to implement punishment.
