Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) agreed to disable video games from the front centre touch screens of its electric cars while the vehicle is moving.
The move comes after the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a safety probe into 580,000 Tesla vehicles.
The NHTSA investigation was prompted by a complaint in November about the game feature from a Tesla Model 3 driver in Oregon.
The road safety agency said the “Passenger Play” feature could distract the driver and increase the risk of a crash.
The probe covers about 580,000 Tesla Models S, X, Y and 3 from the 2017 through 2022 model years.
In documents detailing the investigation, NHTSA said “Passenger Play” has been available since December 2020. Before that, enabling gameplay was only possible when the vehicles were in park mode.
The NHTSA spokeswoman said regulators had discussed concerns about the system with Tesla and the company agreed to send out a software update over the internet so the “Passenger Play” function will be locked while the cars are in motion.
