Wizz Air Holdings (AIM:WIZZ) Plc announced it bought 15 daily slot pairs at Gatwick Airport from Norwegian Air Shuttle.

The European budget airline also said it will base four additional Airbus A321neo aircraft at Gatwick as a result, subsequently giving it a total of five aircraft based at Gatwick from Spring 2022 onwards.

Wizz began operating a base at Gatwick in October 2020 and it intends to launch a host of new low-fare routes using its expanded number of slots.

The Hungary headquartered airline added that throughout the pandemic is has focused on growing in the UK and across its network – opening 18 new bases, starting 400 new routes and adding 39 aircraft since March 2020.

"This announcement is further evidence of our commitment to London Gatwick Airport as well as the UK market,” said chief executive József Váradi.

“Acquiring airport slots at Gatwick Airport will enable us to enhance our presence and competitive position in the London market.

“We continue to develop our business in United Kingdom and remain committed to making air travel affordable for all. The 2022 season has the potential to be a tremendous opportunity for UK aviation to get back on its feet."
