Malta set to green light use of recreational cannabis as a further four countries prepare to follow suit

Next out of the blocks will be Luxembourg, followed by Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands

Europe’s recreational cannabis boogey train looks set to get underway in Malta with the island state readying to legalise recreational use of the drug imminently.

The parliament there will vote on Wednesday on legislation that would allow over-18s to possess seven grams of weed, and cultivate four plants per person.

Next out of the blocks will be Luxembourg, followed by Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands (where it is legal to smoke spliff but illegal to produce or deal the drug).

Italy, meanwhile, may be in the second wave as it plans to hold a referendum on the issue next year.

The news had zero impact on UK stocks in the cannabis sector, which are focused primarily on the development of the drug for medicinal purposes.
