Lidl unveiled an ambitious new store opening programme in the UK which will create 4,000 extra jobs.
The German no-frills supermarket chain said it aims to open 220 new stores by 2025, taking its total in the UK to 1,100. It plans to have 1,000 stores open by 2023.
Lidl made the announcement alongside its latest results which showed its UK arm bounced back to a profit of £9.8mln in the year to February 2021 compared to a loss of £25mln a year ago. Revenues jumped 12% to £7.7bn.
Wages during the year rose £17.5mln including bonuses of £9.5mln.
Lidl GB chief executive Christian Hartnagel said: "We delivered an impressive trading performance in the period which was supported by our continued investment in new and existing stores, product innovation and our people.”
The grocer added it aimed to reduce its own-brand plastic packaging 40% by 2025 and in packaging overall by 25% over the same period.
